We've all seen ads with a woman dashing across a field of flowers and talking about how a certain spray made her feel confident and fresh. Did you ever wonder what she's talking about? Advertisers and companies who make "feminine products" would like you to believe that women need their product in order to be clean or to keep their vaginas from smelling bad. This is absolutely not true.

Using sprays and douches can create an allergic irritation or infection in your vagina. If you use a spray or other deodorant, it may cover up important symptoms of an infection or upset your system's natural balance. It is important to know that your vagina is a self-cleaning organ. As long as you wash your outer body once a day with a mild, unscented soap and plenty of warm water, your inner body will take care of cleaning itself. Also, change your underwear every day and choose ones that are cotton or have a cotton crotch panel to help prevent infections.

No matter how clean you are, you may occasionally get a vaginal infection. These are very common and most women get at least one vaginal infection at some point in their lives. Your gynecologist or family doctor can prescribe medication that will treat the problem. Signs of infection include a fishy or other bad odor, pain or itching in your vaginal area, or a discharge that seems different than what is normal for you.
