According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless, tasteless gas that can be deadly. More than 500 Americans are accidentally killed by carbon monoxide poisoning every year.

During a power outage, never use gasoline or charcoal-burning devices, such as generators, grills, or camp stoves, inside your home, basement, or garage or near a window. Carbon monoxide from these sources can build up in your home and poison the people and animals inside.

People who are sleeping or who have been drinking can die from carbon monoxide poisoning even before experiencing symptoms. The most common symptoms are headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion. All homes should have at least one battery-powered carbon monoxide detector.
