First always call the Doctor. If your child is on medications they may be at risk for complications, a phone call is the first line of defense.

Below are some ideas to get you started.

Have on hand

A Child Care book a good medical encyclopedia, a first aid kit, plus a supply (in addition to first aid kit) of over the counter medicines (acetaminophen - pain relievers, diphenhydramine - antihistamine, decongestant, liquid antacid, hydrocortisone anti-itch ointment, etc). If your child uses a special over the counter medicine, then make sure you have extra on hand.

If both Mom and Dad work outside the home, then it is a good idea to make arrangements now (before your child is sick), for a caregiver to take care of your sick child. Unless of course you can take off from work. This will lessen any stress you may have, knowing that your child will be properly taken care of. The caregiver you find will be required to take your child to the Doctor as necessary and follow any instructions given.

Taking care of your sick child at home (check with Doctor for details):

First know where to find information (Doctor, Medical encyclopedia, etc.) and before your child is sick read a good book on "Caring for a sick child". There is a lot of information to learn. We will list just a few various topics to get you interested in researching it farther.

The sick room: This is usually the child's bedroom. They may need to be moved closer to you or away from others (if they are contagious). The room should be free of clutter and lots of light (unless the child has an eye problem).

Supplies: first aid kit, a small bell to ring when your child needs you, a room monitor, a pot or bowl for your child to throw up in, extra sheets, blankets, towels, etc.

Fun stuff (for when your child is able to): have available story & music tapes, this is better than TV it allows the child to rest better with their eyes closed. If your child is not very sick then TV is ok. Also have on hand, small games (like Boggle), cards, small pads with stuff to do, puzzles, drawing stuff, "Game Boy" type games, etc. Reading books that you read to your child.

Diet: Check with Doctor.

Special needs: Special needs require special equipment. When you are given any special equipment - make sure you get the proper information with it to provide the best care. It is very important that you know how to use, or perform any special task. For example; giving diabetic shots. When in doubt ask questions, better to be embarrassed than to make a mistake.

Long term illness: Educate yourself this will give you an ability to work with less stress - by knowing what to do and when to do it. The more knowledge your can acquire the more organized you will be come. Long term care is just like it sounds, "Everyday Care" Be efficient in your care to maximize your effort. For example if you need to change sheets daily then keep a few sets very close by instead of walking up and down steps just for that. When you go from one room to another don't go empty handed, if you see something that needs to be put away and you are going in that same place then take it with you. Don't make a extra trip for it. If you have children in the home, then assign them a few of the simple chores to help you out. Also remember to get a short rest each day if possible.
