According to the U.S Surgeon General, regular physical activity can help people with chronic and disabling conditions improve their stamina and muscle strength and can improve their psychological well-being and quality of life.

A great sports resource for people with disabilities is The National Sports Center for the Disabled (NSCD). The NSCD is an innovative non-profit that provides recreation for children and adults with disabilities. Each year, about 3,000 children and adults with disabilities take advantage of the recreation opportunities provided by the NSCD or train with the NSCD's competition program. A staff of 54 and more than 1,000 trained volunteers provide about 28,000 lessons to participants from 50 states and almost a dozen international groups. Participants' disabilities include:

blindness,
amputation,
deafness,
developmental disabilities,
permanent spine, head and limb injuries,
birth defects,
terminal and progressive illnesses,
severe asthma,
and severe diabetes.

People with asthma can manage their condition and participate in almost any sport they wish.
