Parents often wonder if the health cautions they hear on television also apply to children. The answer for many of them is-YES! Here are several of the popular suggestions about diet and exercise that apply to both parents AND their school-age children.

1. Exercise!

Turn off the TV, and start walking, biking, playing basketball and other games outside. Doing these things together is a good way to help children understand that exercise is important.

2. Eat Breakfast!

This one habit can help children do better at school, and can help parents start the day with energy and a positive attitude.

3. Maintain a healthy weight!

Regular exercise and a well-balanced diet are important for kids as well as adults. Parents have a special responsibility to keep the amount of fat, sugar, and salt children consume at home limited.

4. Reduce Fats and Cholesterol!

Parents should choose a variety of foods for children, and as they grow older, encourage children to choose such foods for themselves. Choose lower fat, high quality protein sources for school-age children. This means skim or 1% milk, lean meat and fish, chicken and vegetables. Eat lots of whole grains-breads and cereals- fiber and energy.

5. Learn about Your Family Health History!

If high cholesterol counts or heart disease run in the family, school-age kids should be checked.

6. 5-A-Day for Good Health!

Fruits and vegetables, that is. You can include fruits and vegetables in every meal and snack.
