For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints. 1 Corinthians 14:33

I was going through my purse, trying to find a pen so I could jot down some prayer concerns. It was December twenty third, and my husband and I had spent a long, tiring day waiting in lines and traffic to do some last minute Christmas shopping. As I fumbled through my messy purse I thought, "This purse resembles my life right now - chaotic and disorganized."

We were building on to our house, and my older son had moved his belongings home from college for the semester break. So my small home was hard to even walk through, let alone decorate for Christmas. On top of that, my dishes and laundry were growing and thriving like a well tended garden. No matter how many dishes or clothes I washed, there seemed to be that many more. With a full-time job and many different responsibilities, I just felt overwhelmed. It was sapping me of all of the joy of the season.

In the midst of this, the Lord reminded me of this Scripture. God is not the author of confusion. He is an organized, structured God. Every living thing was created in perfect order, down to the smallest single cell. He would give order to my life if I would keep him as my number one priority. I realized that God would help me out of this confusion and bring me some peace - maybe in the midst of it - until my life settled down.

But more important that those types of temporary inconveniences, we don't have to be ruled by confusion in the bigger issues either. We can have God's peace about right and wrong, moral controversies, and life's decisions. His peace is available in our trials and temptations. The Bible is our solid anchor to steady and reassure us in perplexing and unsettling times.

So don't let your life be like my purse - mass chaos! Surrender each day to your loving Heavenly Father. He will bring peace out of your confusion.
