For home, when you see your Doctor and get a prescription make sure he fills out any additional forms for the Agency or school. All medication must be properly marked with original labels. If a label is illegible you will need to get it replaced. It is a good idea - for medications that you use daily - to get a empty extra bottle to have on hand. You need to know what effects each medication will have; wanted and unwanted effects. It is a good idea to get an information sheet on each drug from the Pharmacy when your prescription is filled. Keep this in the client book. You will also maintain a Medication Administration Record form that you can get from your agency.

For school you will need a separate bottle, that is properly marked. Ask the pharmacist for an extra one for school. Make sure you get any school medication forms filled out, signed and sent in with the medication. If there are any special instructions do not be afraid to call the school nurse directly. If you have any school health concerns call the nurse. The school nurse phone number should be on a list by your telephone.

For all prescription and nonprescription (over the counter pills, liquids, creams, vitamins, etc) medications, you must document and have the proper forms filled out This is for your foster child's safety and for your safety. You may be held responsible for negligence if a child has a serious health problem or complication with medications administered by you incorrectly.

All prescription and nonprescription medications should be locked up. The rules are different everywhere, check your area. Even if you are not required to do so I recommend you do it anyway. This is for your safety and for your foster child's safety.
