THE ADOPTION REFERRAL
Deng Xiaopeng dies by millimeters in Beijing.
Hurricane Edowardo pumps its failing strength
past Nantucket, and rain sweeps Southern China.
All summer we have waited-weather and politics
Passing like shadows, war games and rumors,
floods, and the Seventh Fleet in the Taiwan Straits-
but now we know who you are, Xinyu, New Jade.
What it promised, older than we requested,
Four years, but its concern is no concern of ours.
We study your picture and you gaze back
With an almost wry smile as if you know
That where you're concerned there's no
Other possible answer, but "We love her."
