The world was touched and saddened recently by the death of Michelle Carew. This brave young woman lost her battle with Leukemia at the tender age of 18. During her illness her father, Rod Carew, (a coach for the California Angels baseball team) made public pleas for bone marrow donors. Bone marrow donors are all too few and a compatible match can sometimes be impossible. Without a needed bone marrow donor match, a Leukemia patient needing a donor will probably die if one is not found. All too many people die each year because a compatible match couldn't be found.
There is an answer to this problem. When a baby is born, if part of the umbilical cord (placenta) is properly stored and saved, should that child ever need a bone marrow transplant their own cord will be their perfect and exact match.
Please note the information below and contact the Cord Blood Bank prior to the birth of your child. This simple step could one day save your loved one's life!
