What Do I Have to Buy
Assuming you do not yet have a
foster child or a room set up for them. Starting at zero.
This listing is meant to get you in the "getting ready spirit". It is not a complete listing of everything you will ever need.
Things you may need to buy with your own funds:
A room that has the minimum square footage (check with your agency)
A bed , pillow, bed cover, sheets, pillow case, alarm clock, dresser, window w/window treatments (room must have a window), mirror, room decorations (age appropriate), light (if room does not have one), & storage containers.
For small children: Infant or car seat, crib, bottles, changing table, small toys, baby bag, etc
A place to sit at the kitchen table, fire extinguishers, smoke alarms, towels, face cloths, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, conditioner, over the counter medicines, and insurance.
Other items that are required in the regulations (this is not a complete list- check with your agency);
fireplace cover, protected wood burning stove, a home that is safe - no peeling paint, no exposed wires, hand rails on all steps, non slip steps, safety outlet covers (for sm. children), ground fault circuit in bathroom, no chipping counter tops, A/C or house fan, etc.
Each home has it's own needs to be corrected. Ask your agency to come by and tell you what you need to do.
